Week 12

Week 12

I can't believe it is November already.  The class has been very busy learning many new concepts in all subject areas. This week we will finish learning about Explorers in Social Studies. We have been reading, using our interactive notebooks, and writing about the Explorers. Look in our hall for your child's letter written to Captain Christopher Columbus applying for a job on his one of his ships. We will start our Simple Machines Unit with a trip to the Science Lab on Friday, November 9th.

In Math, we have been working on multiplication and division not using standard algorithm.  Ask your child to show you partial product and partial quotient.  Not using the standard algorithm is helping the students to understand numbers, how they work, and place value. Here are some videos that explain partial product and partial quotient.

In Language Arts, we have been working on theme. Students have been reading and discussing stories and poems and determining the theme of what they have read.  Students have also been working on writing an opinion letter.  I am finding that many of the students in our class have strong opinions about many topics.  Students will then chose his/her favorite explorer and write a paper on why this explorer is the best in his/her opinion.

Important Notes:
Specials have changed due to Election Day.
Week of November 5th:

Our day for Thanksgiving lunch with guests is Wednesday, November 14 at 11:00. Hope to see you at Addison that day enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving meal.

Thanksgiving break is the week of November 19. Please continue to have your child read and log pages into their reading logs.  Also, your child needs to practice math facts to reach the goals they have set.

Look for information about the Holiday Party after the Thanksgiving break.  Our Room Mom, Mrs. Dickerson, will be looking for parents that can help.  Please email me if you are interested in helping.

Wish List:
We are in need of a ream or two of printer paper. We use printer paper for many things in the classroom, such as interavitive notebooks, itty-bitty books, flip books, and many other classroom activities.

What is Going on in Room 308

Wow, I can't believe we have been in school for three weeks. Time is flying. Over the past three weeks, we have been working to learn the rituals and routines for Writers and Readers Workshop. We have also written poems about the BEST PART OF ME. The class will create a photo story with our poems and add it to our class blog. There are some very good writers in Room 308.

In social studies we have worked on map skills, creating aerial maps of Addison, showing what we have learned about maps by identifying and labeling certain features of a map. We will use this knowledge as we move into learning about European Explorers.

In math, we have been learning about place value, comparing numbers, and rounding. We used what we know about place value to “Build 1,000”. Students build 1,000 using cm squares and then as a class we built 10,000.

Science we visited the Science Lab. We signed a contract to show we know the rules in the lab and that we will always follow them to stay safe. In class we have been doing science experiments to show the different states of matter and the water cycle.  This week we will continue to learn more about the water cycle and the different types of perception.

Welcome

Are you ready for the 2012-13 school years? We have a great 4th grade curriculum including topics like the American Revolution, the solar system, and Native American cultures. We will be using the new common core standards in language arts and math.
Please look through your child’s agenda and take home folder each day.  Homework will be sent in the folder every day.  In addition, 4th graders are expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes every night.  We will be using the calendars in the agendas to track how many pages are read each day.  Our goal is to read 3,900 pages by the end of the year. That equals 1,000,000 words!
It is an expectation that a parent sign the agenda each night to signify that your child has completed their homework and reading time.  Behavior concerns will be noted in the agenda as well.  I am looking forward to working with your talented children this year!
Reminders
  • You may send a healthy snack and water bottle with your child each day.
  • Our class eats lunch 11:46-12:16.
  • Our class will have P.E next Monday and Friday. Please send your child wearing athletic shoes.
  • Addison has an early release every Wednesday. Dismissal begins at 1:20.
We will be teaching our students about the 7 leadership habits this year.
1.   Be proactive.
2.   Begin with the end in mind.
3.   Put first things first.
4.   Think win-win.
5.   Seek first to understand.
6.   Synergize.
7.   Sharpen the saw.
We hope your child will share this with you too!
